I will post below a number of my student's post concert reflections. These are from my class of 40 5th graders after they heard their very first compositions performed by Metropolis Ensemble.
I'm sharing these because I believe it to be helpful to keep in my mind the student perspective throughout the entire process. The student's thoughts upon hearing their music performed are profound, insightful and full of sentiments that reflect how exciting and transformative the creative process can be.
When I'm having difficult moments in my teaching I sometimes think of these reflections for motivation and guidance.
I also the kids to comment on what it was like to hear each other's pieces. I believe this is one of the best outcomes for having the concert be a shared experience.
Lastly, the comments almost always highlight the importance of having the students hear their music performed by live musicians. I am a strong believe that this final step makes the entire experience extremely valuable for the student.
