Looking for a fun, creative activity for the end of the school year? (...or anytime!) Give students an opportunity to make their own beats with Groove Pizza and then let them create their own harmonic or melodic accompaniment with AQWERTYON.
These two web apps created by the folks at NYU's MusEdLab have tremendous creative power combined with an excellent user interface that all students can quickly master. Both of these instruments were designed with student input and user testing which helped the designers create something that my students love to use.
In the video you see my students sharing their work with the class. After a brief discussion about the prevalence and significance of beat-making and the importance of listening to your beats as you build them, the directions were simply:
Spend time building one or two original beats in Groove Pizza.
After you've made some beats that you love create a harmonic or melodic accompaniment using AQWERTYON.
BONUS: Because of Groove Pizza's unique way of mapping rhythms to shapes we had a class discussion on isosceles triangles!
